The annual Sanja Matsuri in Asakusa, one of the major Shinto festivals of Tokyo, was held this past weekend. Taking place on the streets around Senso-ji temple, the festival is like a giant block party, albeit one involving taiko drums and loincloths. While spectators come by thousands from all over witness the mikoshi being carried and jostled down streets both wide and narrow, it’s hard to deny that this is, first and foremost, a local festival celebrating communal bonds.
