In Japan, today is known as a Day of the Ox, one of two occurring this summer. (The second will be on Aug. 1). Traditionally on this day, Japanese eat unagi (freshwater eel), which is believed to increase one’s stamina during the dog days of summer. Customs aside, high temperatures here are breaking records this year so make sure you stay cool, drink enough liquids and eat the right foods.
