🌳We invite you to experience with us what life in Tokyo has to offer.😎

Omotesando Avenue was built in 1920 as an approach to Meiji Shrine. Meiji Jingu Shrine is famous as the most visited shrine in Japan for Hatsumode.

Meiji Jingu Shrine has the largest Otorii (Grand Gate) in Japan, from which an approach runs north to south. The street leading to the south approach is called “Omotesando,” and is lined with zelkova trees. The zelkova trees that have become the symbol of Omotesando were planted after World War II. Many of the zelkova trees planted in the Taisho era (1912-1926) were burnt down in World War II, so they were replanted after the war and have become part of the landscape of our time!

It was in the 1960s that the Aoyama/Omotesando area was transformed into a fashion district. The Great Kanto Earthquake and the Tokyo Olympics had a lot to do with this change.

In 1923, three years after the construction of Meiji Shrine, the Great Kanto Earthquake occurred. The Great Kanto Earthquake that occurred that year severely damaged wooden houses in Tokyo. The Dojunkai was then established by the Ministry of Home Affairs to assist in the recovery from the earthquake, and many modern apartments were built in Tokyo and neighboring prefectures.

The Dojun-kai Aoyama Apartments, which opened along Omotesando Avenue in 1926, is one such example. It was a state-of-the-art apartment building built of reinforced concrete with electricity, gas, water, and flush toilets, all of which were rare at the time. Needless to say, the new technology attracted a great deal of attention.

Ownership and management of the Dojunkai Aoyama Apartments changed hands, and after 1960, when the apartments became privately owned, they were used as boutiques and galleries. This was the beginning of the Omotesando district’s development into the fashion center it is today. The Dojunkai Aoyama Apartments were demolished in 2003 due to aging, and Omotesando Hills was built on the site.
