Lumbarda is a village located at the end of the island, 6 kilometers East from the Town of Korčula. It has more than 1,000 inhabitants and consists of several hamlets scattered along the coast, small coves, and hills that are surrounded by vast fields of vineyards. Lumbarda will most certainly delight you with its beauty, especially its sandy beaches. Archaeological remains show that Greeks were the first to establish these agricultural settlements, with artifacts dating from the 4th century BC, which you can see in the City Museum of Korčula, the most important of which is the Psephism of Lumbarda. In Lumbarda, you can see beautiful villas dating from the 16th century, built as summer residences of wealthy families from Korčula. This place is also famous for its many churches and chapels, some dating back to1774.
For centuries residents of Lumbarda have been engaged in fishing and agriculture, particularly winemaking. There are two distinct varieties of cultivated grapevine – Plavac and Grk. Therefore, when you come to Lumbarda, treat yourself to these famous wines. Lumbarda is also famous for stone cutting and was the birthplace of two famous sculptors, Frano Kršinić and Ivo Lozica. Today the people of Lumbarda are orientated toward tourism.
