A cave of secret relics buried in a sheer cliff with a temple built against the rock? Sounds mysterious! ⛰⛩
This Buddhist temple is known as Takkoku no Iwaya, and it is found in Hiraizumi, Iwate Prefecture. It’s a bit out of the way, but that only lends to the air of wonder surrounding it! The original structure was built in the early 9th century, but it was lost to time due to many fires over the years. There were also originally 108 statues of the god of victory—Bishamon—nestled within the temple, but now only 33 remain and they only make appearances for special occasions.
It’s a quiet spot in the Japanese countryside, so if you’re looking to get away from the more touristy parts of Japan, then Takkoku no Iwaya is a safe bet!
