The Great Buddha of Kamakura, the Great Buddha of Nara, and the Great Buddha of…?
Nestled within Kinpozan Shoboji Temple of Gifu Prefecture is the third of the three great Buddhas of Japan. It is the most recently constructed of the three, having been created in the 19th century, but it has still been designated as an important cultural property in Japan. It stands 13.7 meters (roughly 44 feet) in height, and was built to honor the victims of the earthquakes and famines of the late 18th century.
Kinpozan Shoboji Temple isn’t the only thing worth checking out in the area. Gifu Prefecture is a hotbed of Japanese history with the nearby Gifu Castle and Sekigahara further west. There are also some lovingly tended gardens at Gifu Park just at the base of Mt. Kinka, with more than a few museums!
