Every year in April, the small hot springs town of Tsuetate Onsen in Kumamoto Prefecture strings up over 3500 carp streamers. This splash of colors hangs across the Tsuetate river running through the middle of the town. The Koinobori Festival’s carp streamers flutter in the breeze through the beginning of May in celebration of Children’s Day.
Small cement bridges crisscross the river at points, so you can have a nice walk below the colorful streamers, too! Keep this event in mind for your future visits to Kumamoto!
