Ever seen a giant Buddha statue towering over nature like a small mountain? 🌄
The Great Buddha of Kamakura started construction in the mid-13th century by an unidentified artist. It was originally inside of a temple hall, but that building was ultimately destroyed just before the 16th century by a major earthquake. The copper image of Amida Buddha stands 13.35 meters (43.8 feet) in height and weighs 121 metric tonnes. Surprisingly, not the biggest one in Japan, but the fact that it’s outside in the open air certainly sets it apart! A point of pride for Kanagawa Prefecture, to be sure!
There are quite a few other scenic spots in the area like gardens and parks as well, and even a small shrine or two.
What great pictures! Thanks @jin2_mode!
