Happen to know what building’s etched in the 10-yen coin? 🏯🎌
Across the Uji river just south of Kyoto, you will find the Byodo-in Temple in Uji city. Built in 1052 during the Heian period (late 8th century to the 12th century), this temple is one of Japan’s National Treasures. The main building of the temple is known as the Phoenix Hall, and this beautiful hall is what’s found on the Japanese 10-yen coin.
Golden Chinese phoenixes face off on the roof of the central structure. Flanking it on either side are two corridors said to resemble outstretched wings. The bright red with gold highlights serve as a perfect frame for the lone sculpture of Amida carved from Japanese cypress and layered with gold leaf. Truly, a picturesque temple among the many in Kyoto Prefecture. (Illuminations are currently unavailable to the public.)
