This video shows the introduction and window scenery of the Series 800 Tsubame 321 bound for Kumamoto Station running on the Kyushu Shinkansen. 800 Series Shinkansen has two types, Series 800 (U001-006) and New 800 Series (U007-009), and I boarded and filmed the Series 800 car (U003).
The Series 800 Shinkansen Tsubame debuted in 2004 when the Kyushu Shinkansen line between Shin-Yatsushiro and Kagoshima-chuo was partially opened. Its pure white body with a flowing long nose and vertical headlights is a shape not seen on any other Shinkansen train.
Mr. Seiji Mitooka, an industrial designer of Dawn Design Institute, who designed this 800 series Shinkansen train, said the following in his lecture “Design for the Public”.
The proposal for the “Tsubame” bullet train at the time read, “The Kyushu bullet train ‘Tsubame’ is a public tool that connects the economy, culture, and people of Kyushu, and creates rich communication. We will design it in terms of both hardware and software as a user-friendly public device that is easy for both users and operators to use.
The Kyushu Shinkansen “Tsubame” will pursue universality and functional beauty, while at the same time expressing the regional identity of Asia, Japan, Kyushu, and Kagoshima in a sophisticated way. In order to achieve this, we will strive to enhance universal design so that materials and construction methods produced by advanced technology can be combined with traditional materials and craftsmanship for contemporary use.
In the case of the “Tsubame” bullet train, the undercarriage parts are almost fixed, so nothing can be changed. The only chair that I could design was made of plywood, using wild cherry blossoms and Yatsushiro rushes, and the fabric of the chair was made of Nishijin fabric to create a completely different Series 800 from the Series 700 that it was based on.” He said.
