You know how museums are stiff, stuffy, quiet places where a bunch of people like us admire artwork but can’t tell a paintbrush from a q-tip?
This isn’t that museum!

First off this place is huge! It takes at least 2 hours to explore the whole thing, but also the aircraft are real. They’ve been to space, flown in wars, broken barriers, and advanced technology.

The national air and space museum is housed in two facilities. One in DC and one in northern VA. Together they hold more than 60k artifacts and aircraft and welcome more than 8 million people a year making the complex the most popular museum in the United States!

The Space Shuttle Discovery is probably the most famous aircraft in the museum as the most decorated spaceship in the history of NASA. Discovery flew 39 Earth-orbital missions, spent a total of 365 days in space, and traveled almost 240 million km (150 million mi) —more than the other orbiters. It shuttled 184 men and women into space and back, many of whom flew more than once, for a record-setting total crew count of 251.

The Enola Gay is a lesser-known aircraft, but one of equal importance. This plane carried the first atomic bomb and was the one that dropped it over Hiroshima. War is never pretty, and although this plane deserves its place in history, the darker side to that history should not be forgotten.
