Today is Coming Of Age Day (Seijin No Hi), the Japanese holiday where the country celebrates young people becoming legal adults, having reached the age of 20. Ceremonies are held across the country and traditionally the new adults dress in kimono for the celebration. In the 21st century, not all Japanese young people choose to wear kimono on Coming Of Age Day, but it’s still common to see lots of furisode kimono on the streets, and especially around shrines. We went out to shoot young adults at Harajuku’s Meiji Jingu, one of the most famous shrines in all of Japan, and there were lots of people in kimono coming and going all day.
Please join us in congratulating all of the new adults, and wishing them success and happiness in the future!!
