According to a July report from the Japan Franchise Association, the total number of convenience stores in Japan currently stands at 55,931, an increase of more than 10,000 outlets from a decade ago. Family Mart has spent much of 2021 celebrating its 40th anniversary. Yet, the anniversary comes at a crossroads for the industry as a whole.
