Looking to get off the grid? Look no further than one of the most remote places in the country – Iya Valley on the island of Shikoku. It was this isolation that made the region such a great hideaway for the renowned Heike (Taira) clan in the 12th century. Today, it’s still this seclusion that makes it a popular refuge, perfect for travellers looking to get lost in its deep misty mountains, explore its river gorges and suspension vine bridges and unwind in its bubbling onsen. ⛰️ ♨️
📍 A car is the best way to explore the Iya Valley, particularly the remote parts of Oku-Iya (inner Iya). However, the more accessible Nishi-Iya (Western Iya) can be reached by local bus from either Awa-Ikeda or Oboke Stations on the JR Line running between Takamatsu and Kochi.
