Once a popular pit-stop for feudal lords making their way from Tohoku to Edo (the former name for Tokyo) along the Shimotsuke Kaido route, the post town of Ouchi-juku remains a favourite among travellers. With its over 300-year-old thatched buildings and traditional streetscape, its original charm lives on.
TOP TIP: Be sure to chow down some local negi soba – Ouchi-juku is renowned for its handmade buckwheat noodles. Though don’t be surprised when you’re handed a leek for cutlery instead of chopsticks!
