The ancient torii of Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima remains one of Japan’s most sacred sites to this day. An easy day trip from Hiroshima city centre, the island of Itsukushima itself, meaning ‘island of worship’, was once worshipped as a god. While the torii (pictured) is currently undergoing restoration and is covered by a mesh sheet, the UNESCO-listed shrine complex remains open to visitors. ⛩️
TOP TIP: Explore the beauty of the island – minus the crowds – by staying overnight. Hike up Mt Misen in the early morning for stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea. ⛰️
