Who’s familiar with the beauty of Maruyama Senmaida, a terraced rice paddy on the eastern side of the Kii Peninsula in Mie Prefecture? There are several in the region but this one is particularly picturesque.

📍One of the more unique ways to visit is via the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail on the Iseji Route. This roughly 170km-long trek takes 1-2 weeks, although shorter day hikes of certain sections are another great option. When you reach the southern section of the pilgrimage near Kumano City, take the ‘Hongudo’ mountain pass leading to Kumano Hongu Taisha – and you’ll see these rice paddies on the way!
