Tokyo is home to the most Michelin-starred restaurants in the world. But this doesn’t mean you need to spend big to eat like a king. Join Dean as he sets off to find the cheap eats and epic snack food of Tokyo.

First, we head to the fish markets, not for sushi but to try tamagoyaki – a multi-layered sweetened Japanese omelette on a stick. Next up, trying the popular favourite – takoyaki. Originally from Osaka, you can find these little balls of octopus and batter all over the country. Then it’s time for something sweet: melon pan. This sometimes messy dessert is essentially an ice-cream sandwich using a sweet bun with a crispy sugary top.

From there we head to Takeshita Street, in Tokyo’s Harajuku district, to try all things kitsch. Here Dean finds a gigantic multi-coloured stick of fairy floss, a croquant chou filled with Hokkaido milk custard at Zaku Zaku as well as delicious pan-fried gyoza.

To balance out the sweet we head to Ginza Bairin to enjoy the incredibly delicious and simple katsu sando – a breaded pork cutlet sandwich. Lastly, we raid the local Family Mart to try the ultimate Japanese snack, onigiri – a triangle shaped rice ball, wrapped in seaweed and stuffed with different fillings like salmon or pickled plum before ending the night with a sweet and savoury kare pan. It’s all here in our latest episode of Hawker Style, our original videos series exploring street food from across the globe.
