Tsubamesanjo in Niigata Prefecture is known throughout Japan as a for its high concentration of skilled craftspeople. What is less well known is the region’s spectacular nature. In Tsubamesanjo, you can watch the swans swimming on the Ikarashi River with Mt. Awa as background. It’s rare for swans to sit on a river instead of ponds and lakes. In winter, this region is blanketed with snow. Every year, about 400 swans fly to Tsubamesanjo from Siberia to escape from the severe winter.
