The unmistakable landscape painting of Mount Fuji or other traditional sceneries of Japan can be found on the walls of a local “sentō” bathhouses. They are the result of a long day’s work by dedicated sentō mural artists, whose number has declined over the decades to only three people. Thirty-six-year-old Mizuki Tanaka, who first stumbled upon the art during college, decided to take on the profession when she realized that it could become extinct if there are no younger successors. Today, Tanaka paints picturesque murals for not only sentō but also hotels and “ryōkan” looking to add a nostalgic appeal to their baths, all the while making sure she never paints the same thing twice. 📸: Mizuki Tanaka
