Bed & bath: 3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom
Top amenities: Laundry room with washer-dryer, chef-worthy range of kitchen tools, large stash of children’s toys and books
Best for: History and tradition in a modern home base
Takayama is a riverside city with a rich history (it’s famous for its old town, filled with beautiful Edo-era merchants’ houses), and this carefully refurbished kura (a traditional Japanese wooden warehouse) makes a brilliant base. No expense was spared on its renovation, and highlights range from the huge selection of kitchen equipment to the abundance of tech, whether it’s the induction stove or the ultra-modern washing machine (all appliances are relatively new and were installed in 2025). There’s room for nine guests in three bedrooms, making it ideal for groups of friends, especially ones traveling with kids. Other child-friendly amenities include a high chair, a generous stash of children’s toiletries, and a large supply of diaper bags. Plus, a great night’s sleep is almost guaranteed—this particular home is in one of Takayama’s quieter neighborhoods, and just a short walk from the city’s old town.
