26th April 2025 – (Osaka) A female visitor in her 50s was reported to have collapsed at the Osaka-Kansai Expo on 24th April, according to Japanese media reports on 25th April. She had complained of feeling unwell while at the venue, prompting on-site medical staff to provide initial treatment.
Her condition worsened, and around 2.30pm, paramedics transported her to the hospital. By that time, she was already unconscious, and paramedics performed chest compressions en route. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital.
Since the expo’s opening on April 13, there have been several reports of visitors being hospitalized due to heat-related issues. However, this is the first confirmed fatality. Concerns have been raised about the adequacy of cooling and rest facilities at the vast venue, especially as summer approaches.
The Japan International Exposition Association, the event organizers, has been releasing daily attendance figures but has not disclosed data on injuries or medical incidents despite media requests. Organizers have indicated they are revising their policies and plan to release such information moving forward.
Local reports have highlighted that the expo’s expansive grounds lack sufficient shaded areas and rest zones, raising fears that more visitors could suffer heat-related illnesses during warmer months. The on-site medical clinics are equipped to handle minor cases, while more severe conditions require patients to be transferred to hospitals in Osaka City or surrounding areas.
