SAITAMA (Kyodo) — An accident involving three vehicles occurred on the Tohoku Expressway about 70 kilometers from Tokyo early Thursday morning, killing one person and injuring two others, according to local police.

The person who died was driving a semi-truck with a trailer that caught fire following the accident in the city of Hanyu, while the two injured were respectively driving a tanker truck and a minivehicle, police said, adding they are investigating the cause of the collision.

The semi-trailer and the tanker truck overturned causing one side of the expressway to be temporarily closed from the Hanyu interchange in Saitama Prefecture, near the accident site, to the Tatebayashi interchange in Gunma Prefecture, eastern Japan.
