The World Athletics governing body has announced a sponsorship agreement with Japan Airlines for this year’s flagship World Athletics Championships (WCH) in Tokyo.

As an official supplier, Japan Airlines will transport athletes and key personnel to the Japanese capital for the event, which is set to take place in the National Stadium for nine days from September 13 to 21, 2025.

It will be the third World Championships in Japan, and the second in Tokyo, which also previously hosted the event in 1991.

Japan Airlines has said that as part of the partnership, it will also implement initiatives “to provide the next generation with opportunities to witness world-class competition up close.”

Mitsuko Tottori, Japan Airlines president and group chief executive, commented: “This global event showcases the spirit of pushing beyond limits, and we hope it inspires young people in Japan to take that first courageous step toward the world.

“By sharing the excitement of the genuine ultimate stage with young people, we aim to keep standing as a backbone of Japan’s youth wishing to challenge themselves on the world stage.”

World Athletics has been ramping up its commercial partners ahead of the event, signing fellow Japanese companies Honda, the car manufacturer, and Otsuka Pharmaceutical as sponsors.

As the official transportation for WCH Tokyo 25, Honda will provide electric vehicles to lead the marathon races, drive referees, and transport officials and athletes involved in the event.

Otsuka Pharmaceutical is a global supporter of World Athletics and brand sponsor of WCH 25, meanwhile. The company will supply athletes and other personnel with products such as its Pocari Sweat hydration drink during the event.

Japanese property management company Mori Building signed up as the event’s principal supporter in the real estate category, while the communications arm of Indian conglomerate Tata will provide coverage and broadcast content as part of its five-year host broadcasting deal with World Athletics.

The governing body also announced a renewal of its long-term partnership with Italian sports equipment company Mondo. As an official supplier, Mondo will be involved in all World Athletics Series stadium events from 2025 to 2029.

Japan Airlines, meanwhile, has a multi-year partnership with English Premier League soccer side Liverpool covering both the men’s and women’s teams, in terms of its other sports sponsorship deals.
