What Was Astro Royale?
Superpowered Yakuza
Astro Royale follows Hibaru Yotsurugi, the only biological heir to the Yotsurugi yakuza family, who is forced into a power struggle with his adopted siblings over who will become the gang’s next boss. Things take a dramatic turn one night when a meteorite crashes into Tokyo and soon after, people begin manifesting strange abilities called Astros, which turn what was going to be a normal gang war into a superpowered one.
In the chaos, the family is fractured and Hibaru must use his newfound powers to protect those closest to him from his siblings as they vie for control. As mentioned previously, Astro Royale ran in Shōnen Jump from April 2024 to April 2025. Viz Media and Manga Plus had English simulpubs for the series. The English version was translated by Andria McKnight, with lettering by Effie Colton.
According to information on Jajanken, the average ranking of Astro Royale was 13th, despite the fact that the series had a very strong start, with its first chapter ranking 1st in the Shōnen Jump rankings, but it never quite saw that same level of success again. The series was constantly placed in the late teens or 20s, indicating that the series was unable to retain the attention of its readers. Many manga fans on Reddit who gave the series a shot were not impressed by Astro Royale, to put it gently. It’s likely that Wakui already has sights on creating a new manga, but we’ll find out soon enough.
Astro Royale is available to read on VIZ Media’s website.
