This is behind the counter at Taruya, a Japanese father and daughter run Traditional style Teppan Okonomiyaki izakaya aka drinking restaurant, that’s been around for almost 100 years. It’s tucked away in Hyakkendana, a hidden little area between Dogenzaka and Bukamura, once the busiest part of Shibuya…back in the day before 109 and even the famous Shibuya scramble crossing ever existed. This Tokyo restaurant has a warm, homey vibe often found in Japan’s countryside and today we’ll get a rare glimpse at how this family has kept their business running for generations.

If a restaurant was open since 1931 in the U.S, they would market and advertise that fact and milk it to the fullest extent haha. Nice that they probably don't even have it on the sign over there.
The kitchen has no hygiene whatsoever.. those stain been there 60years!
Can you please the day of life of Sucreries cake owner in Osaka?
The kitchen is like a crime scene for food .😮
Except content. Hoping the next generation keeps the restaurant running
7:50 so Japan is allowed to smoking indoor and food preparation area🤣
I wanna go here. I love mom and pop shops like these. They’re so cozy.
Bravo !! le tradizioni del Giappone sono le migliori !! ❤🔥
Do they have food hygiene inspections in Japan? I'm sorry to say but some of this restaurant looked filthy, in the UK the food hygiene police would close you down in an instant and demand a deep clean.
Kitchen is straight from Resident Evil 7 : Biohazard
My father in law just passed away suddenly and very young.
His dream was to open up a place like this when he retired where could run it with his daughter
( My wife )
Great video
💚
I don't mean to be rude, and I respect the owners' hustle, but cleanliness is essential in any establishment that serves food. Unfortunately, this izakaya does not seem to meet the typical Japanese standards in that regard.
It must be very challenging for them, and it seems they could use more assistance.
Can you at least change the rug from 1930? So unsanitary the whole kitchen.
I wouldn't eat anywhere you can still smoke inside. It's kind of amazing to me it's still allowed. They seem like nice people though.
It's just amazing to see that old shops still able thrive for a long time
Next video: Paolo visiting Vitaly in a jail cell. A day in the life of a foreigner in the Philippines. Behind bars hahaha
Very dirty kitchen…what makes me laugh is she vaccuming
Finally a normal place! The atmosphere seems very homey and comforting and the workers seem like actual people, not your usual overly sterile restaurant with robotic workers.
Smoking over the food he's cooking, disgusting
Slack owner inside
Rotting smell in izakaya
Food biohazard
This place isn't very clean, the chef smokes in the kitchen, the staff are alcoholics… man, I can't wait to go there!
Wow a pre war restaurant is amazing to see now!
from 2pm to midnight, only sundays off.. thats absolutely disgusting 🤢
I really gotta visit Japan soon!
10:37 smooth
State of them walls n stuff rank dont they have trading standards around once a year in japan to monior clenliness
I wanna job where I can have a few drinks.
These videos are my comfort zone
I ACCEPTED IT YOUR VIDEOS ARE SOO GOODD ITS ADDICTING
So do you have to be an alcoholic to get hired or is it just part of the training?
yay ! a new episode of Behind the Counter
👏👏👏
Love the videos but the kitches is super ugly… and smoking while cooking inside?? 💀
WarOnlineReturnOfReckoning
I'm pretty sure all these people are alcoholics.
Do you speak Tagalog? Where are your merch made in?
During my time living in Japan in the late '90s, I often spent evenings at my girlfriend's family izakaya. The work was tough, but they always found ways to enjoy themselves while serving customers. It was part of the bar culture—staff would regularly drink on the job and often joined in the fun with patrons. There was never a night that didn’t feel like a party.
One of your nicest videos, great place, thank you!
I love these videos Paolo, thank you so much! Hope you are doing well! Warm regards from the UK.
Super nice family and nice shop, but the condition of the kitchen gives me ptsd
in germany the health department would close this kitchen…. ick, it is discusting
And yet another disgustingly filthy kitchen 🤮 I watch a lot of food related, Japanese content, and these kind of kitchens show up way too much.
Really liked hearing the grandpa's story
so interesting as always!
