This is behind the counter at Taruya, a Japanese father and daughter run Traditional style Teppan Okonomiyaki izakaya aka drinking restaurant, that’s been around for almost 100 years. It’s tucked away in Hyakkendana, a hidden little area between Dogenzaka and Bukamura, once the busiest part of Shibuya…back in the day before 109 and even the famous Shibuya scramble crossing ever existed. This Tokyo restaurant has a warm, homey vibe often found in Japan’s countryside and today we’ll get a rare glimpse at how this family has kept their business running for generations.

  1. If a restaurant was open since 1931 in the U.S, they would market and advertise that fact and milk it to the fullest extent haha. Nice that they probably don't even have it on the sign over there.

  2. The kitchen has no hygiene whatsoever.. those stain been there 60years!

  3. Do they have food hygiene inspections in Japan? I'm sorry to say but some of this restaurant looked filthy, in the UK the food hygiene police would close you down in an instant and demand a deep clean.

  4. My father in law just passed away suddenly and very young.
His dream was to open up a place like this when he retired where could run it with his daughter
    ( My wife )

    Great video

  5. I don't mean to be rude, and I respect the owners' hustle, but cleanliness is essential in any establishment that serves food. Unfortunately, this izakaya does not seem to meet the typical Japanese standards in that regard.

It must be very challenging for them, and it seems they could use more assistance.

  6. I wouldn't eat anywhere you can still smoke inside. It's kind of amazing to me it's still allowed. They seem like nice people though.

  7. Finally a normal place! The atmosphere seems very homey and comforting and the workers seem like actual people, not your usual overly sterile restaurant with robotic workers.

  8. This place isn't very clean, the chef smokes in the kitchen, the staff are alcoholics… man, I can't wait to go there!

  9. from 2pm to midnight, only sundays off.. thats absolutely disgusting 🤢

  10. State of them walls n stuff rank dont they have trading standards around once a year in japan to monior clenliness

  11. During my time living in Japan in the late '90s, I often spent evenings at my girlfriend's family izakaya. The work was tough, but they always found ways to enjoy themselves while serving customers. It was part of the bar culture—staff would regularly drink on the job and often joined in the fun with patrons. There was never a night that didn’t feel like a party.

  12. And yet another disgustingly filthy kitchen 🤮 I watch a lot of food related, Japanese content, and these kind of kitchens show up way too much.
