Athletics New Zealand proudly announces that Discus Thrower Connor Bell has been selected for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
Connor Bell joins the team in red-hot form after breaking his own New Zealand discus record with a throw of 68.38m at the Oklahoma Throws Series #9 in the United States in May. The 23-year-old from Auckland, who trains under coach Kirsten Hellier, has steadily climbed the world rankings over the past two years and is emerging as one of the top young discus throwers globally. His performance in Ramona not only extended his national record but also surpassed the automatic qualifying standard for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
A Commonwealth Games finalist in Birmingham 2022 and the 2018 Youth Olympic Games champion, Bell has long been earmarked as one of New Zealand’s most promising throwers. Since then, he’s gone from strength to strength on the international stage, making his debut Olympic team in Paris in 2024.
The 2025 championships will take place from 13–21 September at the iconic Japan National Stadium — the venue that hosted the athletics programme during the 2020 Olympic Games. Featuring a line-up of Olympic champions, World Championship medallists, and some of the brightest names in global track and field.
