TOKYO (Kyodo) — An 89th-minute goal from defender Henrique Trevisan salvaged a 2-2 draw for FC Tokyo against local rivals Tokyo Verdy in the J-League first division on Wednesday.
The Brazilian center-back rose high to head the equalizer off Soma Anzai’s ball into the box after the Verdy defense cleared the winger’s initial free kick from near the right touchline at Tokyo’s Ajinomoto Stadium.
First-year manager Rikizo Matsuhashi’s team dictated play for much of the Tokyo derby but looked set to come away empty handed as Verdy defended doggedly after going up 2-1 in the 52nd minute, when Itsuki Someno poked the ball away from FC Tokyo keeper Taishi Brandon Nozawa and into the net.
Hiroshi Jofuku’s Verdy drew first blood in the 20th minute on Naoki Hayashi’s header from a corner.
FC Tokyo striker Kein Sato made it 1-1 shortly before halftime, finishing with poise after controlling a ball over the top with his chest.
Also on Wednesday, Sanfrecce Hiroshima defeated league leaders Kashima Antlers 1-0 at Edion Peace Wing Hiroshima.
