Hongkongers have raised concerns about the hygiene standards at popular Japanese restaurant Sushiro after a video circulating online showed a rat scurrying on one of its light panels.

In a reply to the Post’s inquiry, the restaurant said it had hired a professional pest control team to conduct a thorough disinfection and resolution process following the incident on Wednesday.

In the video, which went viral on Thursday, the rat is seen moving on the surface of the panel installed on the ceiling before jumping to an area near an air conditioner in the restaurant located in Lok Fu Place in Wong Tai Sin district.

An internet user named “jimmylam_0” posted the video on Threads, a microblogging platform launched by Meta, and said that the restaurant manager asked him not to film the rat.

The social media post has attracted more than 2,300 likes so far.

According to a comment on the video, the restaurant was closed at around 7pm on Wednesday, while many expressed concerns over the “huge” size of the rat and risks of diarrhoea.

In an online post at 5.59pm on Wednesday, Sushiro said it would close the Lok Fu branch for “internal adjustment”, giving no further details.
