Japan is looking to significantly reduce immigration and customs processing times for tourists by introducing new one-stop electronic gates, known as joint kiosks, at its major airports: Kansai International, Haneda, and Narita. These kiosks in Japan eliminate the need for multiple passport checks for immigration, consolidating the process into a single, efficient scan.

Kansai International Airport in Osaka and Terminal 2 of Haneda Airport in Tokyo launched the joint kiosk on April 1, 2025. Haneda’s Terminal 3 will have the technology available by April 11, and Narita Airport’s Terminal 3 will have it by April 7. The new system of joint kiosks will save approximately 20 minutes of waiting time at these airports. Wheelchair users will also be able to use the new gates.

Who is eligible for Japan’s new immigration checks?

Japanese travellers returning to the country can access the system seamlessly. This will tremendously reduce the processing time during immigration and customs.
Foreign passport holders can use the system after submitting their personal information through Visit Japan Web’s official website. A QR code will be generated. Applicants must submit this information at least six hours before arrival to use these services at the airport.

How do you use the joint kiosks at Japan’s airports?

To use the kiosks, passengers must scan their passports and QR codes.
Under Japan’s new immigration check system, foreign passport holders will undergo fingerprinting, facial photography, and document inspection by authorities.
