Home-built drones and a robot oceanographic research boat are two projects that Mozambique will take to Expo 2025, Osaka in Japan, among 14 specific initiatives in artificial intelligence and robotics selected by the country, it was announced on Thursday.

“These are drones made by hand, by a young man. I can say that, in a way, it’s a challenge to the conventional robotics industry (…) It’s very important to take it to this world stage to realise the potential that we have,” explained Larsen Vales, curator of the exhibition that Mozambique is taking to Japan.

Mozambique’s participation in Expo 2025, which will take place in Osaka, Japan, from 13 April to 13 October, was presented yesterday in Maputo and includes a 308 square metre pavilion, comprising a ground floor with permanent and temporary exhibitions, and an upper floor for parallel events such as seminars, lectures and regular video screenings on Mozambique’s economic, tourist and cultural potential.

Expo 2025 will take place under the slogan ‘Designing Future Society for Our Lives,’, with Mozambique adopting the theme ‘Education and Work using Artificial Intelligence and Robotics’, under the sub-theme ‘Empowering Lives’.

With the choice of theme, explains Mozambique’s Commissioner General for Expo 2025 Riduan Adamo, the country is seeking to “stimulate the use of artificial intelligence and robotics in the context of sustainable development”, with a focus on education and projecting these types of solutions for the period following the fulfilment of the Sustainable Development Goals defined by the United Nations, until 2030.

To this end, the commission explains, 14 specific initiatives in artificial intelligence and robotics have been selected, highlighting “success stories and technological innovation projects”, with content that “illustrates issues of innovation in heritage processes, integrated, less expensive and more responsible processes, health and well-being, environmental preservation and resilience to climate change, smart and sustainable cities within the Sustainable Development Goals”.

“The 14 initiatives we’re going to present are artificial intelligence, robotics and we have some that are a mixture,” explained Larsen Vales, adding: “They’re not an end, they’re a means. The end is to solve local problems. Local solutions to local problems, with the added value of artificial intelligence and robotics.”

The aim is to “simplify procedures”, reduce costs and increase safety, with local projects, such as a robot boat that is included in the 14 projects that Mozambique is taking to Expo 2025.

“This robot boat has two advantages right from the start, when it is implemented. As it is intended for oceanographic research, it drastically lowers acquisition and operating costs, but also reduces the risks for the crew. Being manned and monitored remotely, we don’t need to put people in certain danger zones in the ocean,” said the curator of the Mozambican participation.

The aim of this endeavour, defended Riduan Adamo, the commissioner-general of Mozambique’s participation in Expo 2025, is to “project the country towards this type of solution post-2030”.

In addition, he said, the country will also publicise its commitment to ‘made in Mozambique’ certification at the exhibition, including all the provinces, with 16 June being planned as the national day at Expo 2025.

“It’s an opportunity to promote the country’s image and its potential and also, and above all, to mobilise strategic partnerships to boost our country’s socio-economic development,” concluded Riduan Adamo.
