Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai is not only a landmark event for innovation and culture but also a unique opportunity for philatelists. Japan and several participating countries have released special stamps to commemorate the occasion. Here are five notable stamps that capture the spirit of Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai:
1. Expo 2025 Osaka commemorative stamps
Japan Post marks Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai with the release of special postage stamps. The first, issued in 2024, was an 84-yen stamp sheet with a donation component to support Expo preparations. Featuring the Expo logo and official mascot Myaku-Myaku, this stamp was only available for a limited time. In 2025, on 11 April, a 110-yen stamp sheet will be released, showcasing Expo buildings and Myaku-Myaku enjoying Japanese culture.
2. Czechia: a nod to art and innovation
Czech Post has unveiled two stamp sheets in honour of Czechia’s participation in Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai. The first stamp is dedicated to the Czech pavilion and its symbols. The second stamp sheet, created in collaboration with the Mucha Foundation – a partner of the Czech participation at Expo 2025 – is inspired by Alfons Mucha’s famous Art Nouveau posters. The stamps will be issued in limited quantities of 23,000 and 26,000, available from 16 April. This issue marks the eighth time Czech Post has issued special stamps for a World Expo, following similar releases for Expo 1958 Brussels, Expo 1967 Montreal, Expo 1970 Osaka, Expo 1992 Seville, Expo 2010 Shanghai, Expo 2015 Milan and Expo 2020 Dubai.
3. France: a tribute to love and innovation
On 14 April, La Poste will release a stamp commemorating France’s pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai. Designed by Yukiko Noritake, the stamp features a striking representation of the pavilion’s architecture. It includes a hot red foil stamping on the red sun and a varnish finish on the ribbons and edges of the sheet, adding a touch of elegance to the design. This visual celebration reflects the pavilion’s remarkable architecture, with its theatre-like façade and monumental staircase, symbolising the unbroken thread of love. A total of 660,000 copies will be printed.
4. San Marino: celebrating heritage and innovation
The special stamp from San Marino issued for Expo 2025 features the iconic First Tower of San Marino, and reflects the design of the country’s pavilion, created by students from the University of San Marino. The stamp has a print run of 20,000 copies.
5. Monaco: an ode to environmental care
Monaco’s special stamp for Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai embodies the Principality’s commitment to environmental preservation. The stamp features the theme of Monaco’s pavilion, “Take Care of Wonder,” which showcases the harmonious integration of a Japanese garden and a Mediterranean garden. This design reflects Monaco’s dedication to safeguarding the environment both within its borders and globally. The stamp has a print run of 40,000 copies.
