Following the Shanghai Debut, the Exhibition Brings Loewe’s Craft History to Tokyo
Loewe has unveiled its first major brand exhibition, Crafted World, in Tokyo’s Harajuku district, celebrating its Spanish heritage and longstanding commitment to handmade craftsmanship. The interactive exhibition, which follows its debut in Shanghai in 2024, offers visitors a comprehensive look at Loewe’s evolution from its 1846 founding as a leather-making collective in Madrid to its status as a leading global luxury fashion house.
Designed in collaboration with OMA, a studio known for its innovative architectural designs, Crafted World provides a journey through Loewe’s iconic designs and cultural collaborations. The exhibition covers significant milestones, including Loewe’s appointment as an official supplier to the Spanish Royal Family, its first store opening in Japan, its acquisition by LVMH, and its renaissance under Creative Director Jonathan Anderson.
The exhibition not only reflects on the past but also celebrates the art of craftsmanship that has been supported through initiatives like the Loewe Foundation, the annual Craft Prize, and collaborations with artisans worldwide. Visitors can experience the diverse influences on Loewe’s designs, from the traditional sights and sounds of Spain to the Paris runway, and explore interactive rooms that dive into the brand’s recent collaborations, including those with Studio Ghibli and Kyoto-based ceramicist Suna Fujita.
Crafted World Tokyo features a specially curated collection of works from cultural projects both in Japan and internationally. It includes a video showcasing the Loewe Foundation’s support for the Onishi family, traditional craftsmen of ceremonial Kama tea kettles in Kyoto for over 400 years. Works by Craft Prize finalists such as Tanabe Chikuunsai IV, Moe Watanabe, 2019 winner Genta Ishizuka, and Salone artisans Arko, Hafu Matsumoto, and Jiro Yonezawa are also on display.
Additionally, the exhibition boasts unique elements tailored to its Tokyo presentation, such as an illuminated façade adorned with Loewe iconography, a staircase designed to be covered with thousands of stickers distributed to guests, and a gift shop offering exclusive products specific to the Tokyo edition of Crafted World.
