Dr Masaki Kashiwara, project professor at the Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences (RIMS) and program-specific professor at the Kyoto University Institute for Advanced Study (KUIAS), has been awarded the 2025 Abel Prize in recognition for “pioneering scientific achievements in mathematics.”

On behalf of Kyoto University, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Professor Masaki Kashiwara on being awarded the 2025 Abel Prize by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters in recognition of his globally acclaimed research.
The Abel Prize, named after the Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel, is awarded to mathematicians who have made outstanding contributions to the field and is regarded as the Nobel Prize of mathematics, alongside the Fields Medal. As a member of Kyoto University, I take great pride in the fact that Professor Kashiwara’s remarkable achievements, which resulted from his many years of dedication to a path that opened new frontiers in academia, have now culminated in this award. I am also confident that his success will serve as an inspiration to students and early-career researchers not only at our institution but throughout Japan.
I sincerely congratulate Professor Kashiwara on this distinguished honor.
