The Hotel Gracery Shinjuku is the only Tokyo hotel I’ve stayed in twice! The location’s excellent, right in the middle of Kabukicho and a very short walk from Shinjuku Station, which is well connected so you can get around Tokyo easily. The rooms are good, with a larger bathroom than many in Tokyo. The hotel starts on floor 8 (it’s above Toho Cinemas), so you’re guaranteed a room with a high floor, and many have city views. I loved the sparkling view over Tokyo! Plus: there’s a Godzilla statue on the hotel! If you stay there, you can go out on the terrace right next to Godzilla (although it has been closed recently). There are small Godzilla touches around the hotel, like a scene in the lobby to pose with. The video also covers whether it’s safe to stay in Kabukicho, which is the red light district and is often called the “bad area” of Tokyo. The video shows what it’s really like there, and my experiences at night and during the daytime.

  1. The last time we were there, the Godzilla patio was open but the café was closed.
That Don Quixote is one of the few places open early in the morning. I am very familiar with that Donki location.

  2. I stayed in the Hotel Gracery in August 2024. My family loves Godzilla and we wanted to stay there. It was a pleasant stay – the room was spacious, the amenities were good, and the location was perfect. We would stay there again.

  3. I dont know whats up with that terrace. They haven’t been letting people go out there for at least a year and no explanation given. 🥲🤷‍♂️

  4. This is so helpful! We are staying here in May. Really helps to know how to get there and where to go in the building to get to the check in. Thank you!

  5. the hotel is excellent but the terrace was closed even when we were there October 2024. Shinjuku was a bit sketchy then but we never felt unsafe.

  6. We stayed at this hotel on our first Japan trip last year and will stay here again this summer. The front desk staff was very nice and helped me forwarding our luggage to the next hotel during our last trip. The room was typically small like most Japanese hotels but the bathroom here was more spacious than the bathroom at the APA hotel nearby where we stayed for the second part of the trip last year. Overall we felt safe while we were there walking around late at nights. We definitely love staying here and will come back to this hotel this summer. Looking forward to visiting this area again.

  7. Kabukicho is my home away from home in Japan. As long as you stay away from the eastern side (which is where majority of the touts are; mainly Nigerians), you'll have no problems. While there are hundreds of places to eat there, I highly recommend Menya Kokoro, which is across the street from Seibu Shinjuku Station.

  8. Kabukicho is safe, just don't follow anyone asking if you "want to see pretty ladies". You will get overcharged for drinks. Lots of families go there and you won't be going out with kids super late at night anyway. As for the terrace, it's been closed for ages after someone jumped off, last I heard there is no plan to reopen.

  9. What room type did you stay in?
I considered the Gracery for my trip this autumn, but the superior double rooms (with the queen bed) looked quite small as we'll be staying 6 nights with 2 large and at least 2 small cases. The twin rooms were a good deal more expensive.

In the end we found a brand new (still being built, opening late September) hotel called &Here Shinjuku. For the same price of the regular double room at the Gracery, we got a 27sqm triple room with a separate toilet and a microwave. It's around the corner from Shinjuku Sanchome, and only about 10min from Shinjuku station, so we we're still in the heart of everything (and apparently, in the lively and bar-full gay quarters).
We checked their other hotels in Osaka and Ueno and it looks good, so we're gonna give this new one a try 🙂

We also nearly took a love hotel simply because the rooms are huge, soundproof and generally well-equipped for entertainment. But the decors are often very gaudy and I wasn't sure if I could stand it for a whole week xD

  10. Nice, thank you for another video. As the viewing deck is closed does also mean that the lazer eyes and smoke machine are also not working?

  11. Not sure if I'm oblivious, but i have never come across any seedy or questionable areas in Japan. Maybe because I'm focused on food 😊.

  12. I just booked for a trip in late May based on a previous video you shared. Perfect timing and now this confirms I made a great decision for my first trip to Tokyo! I will keep an eye out for you 😂

  13. All four hotels I stayed at in Tokyo were small but had everything I needed in terms of amenities and service. I chose to move around to different areas to get a feel for the city, rather than staying in one place the whole time, which I find can be limiting. However, the best hotel I stayed at during my time in Japan was Insomnia in Kyoto.

  14. Brings back lots of memories, I stayed there two years ago . My son and I loved it and the area and always felt safe . I had a slight medical problem while we were staying there and the staff went out of their way to help me find a doctors and get an appointment.

  15. Id love to stay at this hotel but I avoid Shinjuku like the plague due to Shinjuku station:( its so huge and confusing, difficult to navigate.

  16. I stayed there and one advantage is it's so distinctive you can see it from miles away. Tokyo streets can be very confusing so that is a big plus as it lessens your chances of getting lost. When I go back I intend on staying somewhere nearby but cheaper so I still have the Godzilla head guiding me home but I get to save some money.
