For Japanese ticket gates that accept tickets (rather than IC card only gates), the design is foolproof – you can put the ticket in any orientation and it will always come out the right side up.
The ticket is retained by the gate if it’s no longer needed, but as this station has two other stations you can transfer to as if it was one trip, the ticket is returned to the traveller.
