Loving Japan while acknowledging its flaws is a balancing act that a lot of Westerners fail to pull off. There’s a term for that uncritical, dreamy utopian vision of Japan—some call it “Nihonjinron” worship, others just call it weeaboo delusion. It’s that idea that Japan is some mystical, honor-bound society where everything is clean, polite, and steeped in tradition—conveniently ignoring its deep-seated racism, sexism, brutal work culture, and government whitewashing of history. Westerners who buy into this myth see only the aesthetic fantasy—samurai, cherry blossoms, anime perfection—while ignoring the very real problems that contradict it.

Japan is beautiful, fascinating, and unique, but it’s also a place where dolphins are slaughtered, the homeless are hidden from sight, and the legal system is downright dystopian with a 99% conviction rate and death row inmates never knowing which morning will be their last. It’s a nation that prides itself on politeness yet has deeply ingrained xenophobia and gender inequality. None of this negates Japan’s rich history, incredible culture, or deep sense of community—but to pretend it’s some flawless utopia is to ignore reality in favor of a fantasy that never really existed.
