What is the Japan Rail Pass?
The Japan Rail Pass is a special train pass for tourists. It lets you ride most trains run by Japan Railways, also called JR. If you remember our video about the Eurail Pass, the JR Pass is similar but for Japan. The pass includes shinkansen (bullet trains), fast express trains, and slower local trains. With the 2025 Osaka Expo coming up, many people will visit Japan. The JR Pass is a great way to travel without needing to buy a ticket every time.
Types of JR Passes
There are three options for the JR Pass:
7 days: Around $331
14 days: Around $530
21 days: Around $5662
You can also choose the Green Pass, which is like first class. It costs about 30% more, but you get bigger seats and a quieter ride.

When I’m at the train station, do I have to speak Japanese at the ticket counter, or can I speak English with the staff there? Unfortunately, I don’t speak that much Japanese, and my Japanese is far too poor to book a ticket since I can only say basic things like “hello.” Do the staff speak English? And how many days in advance should I book my ticket? Are trains often fully booked?
Honestly not worth it anymore unless you are travelling A LOT by shinkansen. And even then, you cannot use all of them with the rail pass.
I didn’t know about the discount shops for individual tickets! That’s really cool 🕵️♀️😊
