Nestled in the Japanese Alps, Shibu Onsen 渋温泉 in Yamanouchi 山ノ内 is a charming hot spring town famed for its historic public baths and traditional ryokans. The town features nine public bathhouses, known as Soto-yu, lovingly maintained by locals and open for guests to enjoy.
Kanaguya Ryokan, a traditional family-owned inn in Shibu Onsen, is said to have inspired the bathhouse design in Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away.
