  1. Loved it! And thank you for pointing out that 3 of the deluxe rooms are smoking rooms.

How much did your room smell of smoke?

  4. Such a pretty train and so clean. I wondered if they provided soap since you have the sink. Good eats. Lovely scenery covered in snow. What a lovely trip/ Thanks for sharing!

  5. Japan and trains … What a wonderful marriage . Unique and outstanding ! Thanks for your video .

  6. Wow, neat! I've never seen the coupling section from the inside before in other videos about this train. Thanks for the video. It was very interesting.

  7. Traveling alone on Japan's only sleeper express train, especially in a first-class seat on the nation’s longest night train, is an experience that transcends mere transit—it is a profound meditation on solitude, tradition, and the art of slow travel. This journey, with its hushed compartments, gentle sways, and rhythmic clatter of rails, invites an introspection that echoes Japan’s own cultural paradoxes: ancient traditions interwoven with modern dynamism, and the quiet grace found in moments of isolation amidst bustling progress.

At the heart of this experience is the sleeper express train itself—a marvel of design and engineering that harkens back to a bygone era of travel. Unlike high-speed bullet trains that prioritize rapid transit and efficiency, this train embodies a slower, more deliberate pace, offering travelers the luxury of time. In a world that increasingly values speed and instant gratification, opting for a night journey is a deliberate act of rebellion—a choice to savor every moment, to let the journey become an integral part of the destination.

The first-class seat on this train is more than a premium travel option; it is a microcosm of refined comfort and understated elegance. In this cocoon of tranquility, the design and ambiance are calibrated to encourage relaxation and introspection. Plush seating, gentle lighting, and quiet spaces create an environment where the external world recedes into a soft-focus background, allowing the mind to wander freely. For the solitary traveler, this setting becomes a sanctuary—a place to reflect on one’s life, ambitions, and the intricate interplay between past and future.

There is also a poetic resonance in traveling alone through Japan’s nocturnal landscapes. As the train glides silently through the darkened countryside, illuminated only by the occasional gleam of distant city lights or the shimmering reflection of moonlight on a river, one can almost hear the ancient rhythms of the land. The isolation of the journey invites contemplation, much like the meditative practices found in Zen Buddhism. It is a time when the mind can quiet its constant chatter and tune into the subtle messages of nature and time, drawing parallels between the steady, unhurried movement of the train and the imperceptible flow of life itself.

Moreover, this solitary voyage on the sleeper express train encapsulates a dialogue between the self and the past. Japan is a nation deeply rooted in its history—its ancient temples, meticulously maintained gardens, and traditions that have withstood the test of time. Traveling alone on a night train is akin to embarking on a journey through these layers of history, where every station passed and every shadow cast on the landscape evokes stories of eras long past. The solitude of the journey magnifies this sense of historical continuity, encouraging a reflective engagement with the temporal dimensions of one’s existence.

From a technological perspective, the sleeper express train represents a fascinating synthesis of old-world charm and modern innovation. It is a space where cutting-edge engineering meets the artisanal attention to detail that is synonymous with Japanese craftsmanship. The train’s interiors, designed with an eye for both functionality and aesthetic appeal, remind us that luxury is not merely about opulence—it is about creating environments that nurture the human spirit. In these settings, every element—from the texture of the upholstery to the ambient soundscape—has been curated to foster a sense of calm and purpose.

The experience also challenges our conventional notions of travel. In many cultures, solitary journeys are seen as isolating or lonely. Yet here, in the context of Japan’s sleeper express, solitude is reframed as a liberating, even enriching, experience. It is a chance to engage in self-dialogue, to recharge away from the incessant distractions of modern life. The rhythmic motion of the train becomes a metronome for the mind, synchronizing thoughts and emotions in a quiet, steady cadence. In that rhythm lies a form of kinetic meditation—an artful blending of movement and stillness, where the journey itself becomes a transformative experience.

Finally, this journey speaks to the human desire for exploration and self-discovery. In a world where virtual travel and digital simulations are becoming increasingly prevalent, the tangible, sensory experience of traveling by night on a sleeper express is a reminder of the irreplaceable value of real-world encounters. It is an invitation to slow down, to observe, and to reconnect with one’s inner self while simultaneously appreciating the beauty of the external world.

In conclusion, riding Japan's only sleeper express train in a first-class seat as you travel alone is a multifaceted journey—a blend of aesthetic pleasure, historical reflection, and deep personal introspection. It challenges the fast-paced norms of modern life, offering instead a space where time, beauty, and solitude converge to create an experience that is both transformative and deeply human. Whether viewed as a metaphor for life’s slow, deliberate rhythms or as a literal adventure into Japan’s nocturnal landscapes, this journey is a reminder that sometimes, the most profound insights come when we take the time to simply be—alone, in transit, and fully present.

  8. Do you save the Bento containers to take lunches in or save leftovers in? Shower seemed small. Good video. Where do you keep all your souvenirs?

  10. Great trip. It's great you have chance to try Single Deluxe Cabin. Like every trip reporter who first time trying Single Deluxe Cabin, always hunting the shower card but didn't realize they already have one at the amenity bag. Perfect time to enjoy this route is in the winter.

  12. Greetings. When You Received The Amenity Bag Of Goodies In First Class Can You Take Back As A Souvenir Too As This Is Once In The Lifetime Of Enjoying The First Class Ride.

  13. To je poprvé v mém životě, kdz závidím dlouhou cestu vlakem. 😂 A pokoj je perfektní mnohem větší než moje pracovní kupé. 😂

  16. In the US on Amtrak, not only is food PROVIDED on the train, but the showers are INCLUDED (NOT time limited) when using a sleeper car. In fact, the bedrooms EACH have showers! Yet people criticize the US passenger train system.

  22. I like the firmness of Japanese bed mattress, but the pillows are my biggest complaint. Westerners are not used to flat pillows.

  23. That was exciting. I've never travelled in a sleeping car before. And a Japanese noodle house recently opened here. I really wanted to go there.
