Day 3 of our Japan trip was meant to be the highlight of our journey—an unforgettable visit to Mt. Fuji’s 5th Station. However, things didn’t go as planned. Despite setting out full of excitement and taking the express bus from Tokyo, we were met with relentless rain and dense fog, which completely overshadowed the experience.

### 🚌 The Journey to Mt. Fuji
We kicked off the day bright and early, catching the express bus from Tokyo to Kawaguchiko. The journey itself was comfortable and scenic, and we couldn’t wait to finally see Japan’s most iconic mountain. As we approached the Mt. Fuji area, we noticed the weather starting to change. Clouds rolled in, and the rain began to pour.
Still hopeful, we boarded another bus heading to the 5th Station, anticipating that the weather might clear as we gained altitude. But as we ascended, it became clear that Mother Nature had other plans for us.
### ☔ A Foggy and Rainy Day at the 5th Station
When we arrived at the 5th Station, we couldn’t see anything beyond a few feet ahead. Thick fog enveloped the entire area, completely obscuring the views of Mt. Fuji. The rain didn’t let up, making it difficult to explore.
We wandered around the station, visited some shops, and tried to make the best of the situation. Warm drinks and small souvenirs lifted our spirits slightly, but the lack of visibility and persistent rain made it hard to enjoy the experience fully.
Mt. Fuji’s 5th Station is a popular stop for climbers and tourists, located at an altitude of 2,300 meters on the Yoshida Trail. The station offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, including the Fuji Five Lakes and, on clear days, even Tokyo. It serves as a starting point for those climbing Mt. Fuji during the official season. At this station stands **Komitake Shrine**, a small but significant Shinto shrine dedicated to the mountain’s divine spirit. Visitors often stop here to pray for safety before their climb. The shrine, with its traditional wooden structure and torii gate, is surrounded by nature and offers a serene atmosphere. Komitake Shrine embodies Japan’s reverence for Mt. Fuji, a sacred mountain deeply rooted in spiritual and cultural traditions. It is a place of both reflection and connection to the natural world, making it a memorable part of any visit to Mt. Fuji.
### 🌄 Lessons from Day 3
Our rainy Mt. Fuji adventure reminded us that travel isn’t always about perfect weather or iconic views—it’s also about embracing the unexpected and finding joy in the journey. Although we didn’t get to see Mt. Fuji’s majestic peak, the experience was still a memorable part of our trip.
If you’re planning a similar trip, here are some tips to consider:
1. **Check the Weather Forecast**: The weather around Mt. Fuji can be unpredictable, so plan ahead to avoid disappointment.
2. **Pack Essentials**: Always carry rain gear, including a raincoat and waterproof shoes, to stay comfortable in bad weather.
3. **Have a Backup Plan**: Be flexible and have alternative activities lined up if the weather doesn’t cooperate.
4. **Enjoy the Process**: Even if things don’t go as planned, the journey itself can still be rewarding.
### 🏞️ Kawaguchiko: A Silver Lining
On our way back to Tokyo, we managed to explore Kawaguchiko a bit, despite the rain. The town’s charm and serene atmosphere provided some solace after the disappointment at Mt. Fuji. Even in bad weather, Kawaguchiko has a lot to offer, from its picturesque lakes to cozy cafes.
