This is a typical workday in Japan for a neighborhood supermarket aka Japanese grocery store, known in Japan as a Supa, it’s named Friend Shop Oyama located in the Kawaguchi, Saitama Prefecture. Operated by the Oyama family since 1987, now with 4 generations all working together under the same roof to offer top-quality goods at un unbeatable price as they hand select their fresh produce in the morning at wholesale markets. Even grandma prepares their in-store sozai deli dishes while their great-grandchildren pitch-in throughout the day. Their morning routine in Japan starts early around 4:30AM at the wholesale market purchasing items for their store. 1. Great to be back again! Hope everyone is able to spend some time with friends and family during this Holiday Season.
Also, thank you for all of the support. My Paolo fromTOKYO Original Hot Sauce has sold out again, but there are a few bottles of Umami Ocean left in the shop if you want that milder kick. https://paolofromtokyohotsauce.com/ I'm hoping to get a new batch crafted in Japan soon and have the shop restocked in the next 1-2 months.

  2. They're making things harder for themselves. Don't starve yourself to feed someone else. They have too much clutter and too low of prices. That van wasn't selling stuff for 10 yen. Bottom chasing is for corporations. These people are clearly poor and the neighborhood is taking advantage of them.

  3. It's so wild to see a family-run neighborhood grocery store in every sense of the name. You just don't see this anymore. What a gem! Thank you Paolo for doing a great service for this hard working family!

  4. We have a market like that here in our subdivision.. owned by a family too , everyday I use to buy fish, vegetables + they would give me free fish meat for my cats and dogs too 🤍 the grandparents and their kids are kind .

During the pandemic they've been a huge help.

Now my mom handles the grocery and she prefers the public market in town.

I missed buying stuff from them ,

  5. were those alternative audio tracks made by you? the german one is really low quality and ai sounding, thats why i ask

  6. hey paolo did you really content ID some smaller channel for using a few seconds on your video? if so that's weak af cause i thought you were a humble guy

  7. I really only come to youtube for a few people and you are one of the main ones! You deserve a break and honestly it felt like you never really took one haha. Hopefully yall can have a lot of family time for the holidays we will always be waiting for your return! Merry Christmas and God Bless

  8. Very beautiful family! Before watching this I asked my 16 years old son to help out at my Sneakers’s store in the Bronx for the holiday season because my two staffs called off and he declined telling me he is going to hangout with his friends at basketball court tomorrow. So selfish but I still love him.

  9. This is heartwarming and inspiring to see. It's been a while since I've enjoyed one of your productions this much. Good work!

  10. すごくいい動画でした。こんなお店が近くにあったら毎日行っちゃいますよ!パオロさん、取材力素晴らしい。

  11. Old mate not loving it anymore 😂 poor thing. Understandable of course! He seems like a cheeky one though 😛

  12. That old man faces truley a face of desperate bussinessman. Who struggle but keep going for future.

  13. Lots of respect to all the family members! Brilliant, hard working family. This is how they make a living and lots of memories spending time together. The kids will take over family values without noticing it, like in ancient times.

  14. It is quite sad that the children are working and not enjoying their youth like other children. Worse, it's romanticised as a good thing because "they spend time with their family", but it's not really quality time because the family members work full time and long hours every day.
TBF, I don't blame the family entirely. As the video rightly said, the big companies are squeezing the margins and making it difficult for the smaller players to make a living working normally. They're forced into this position. But we should not romanticise it. Older people looking exhausted and still working, not enjoying their old age, is neither normal nor desirable, same with children working.

  15. My parents run the same grocery shop in Central Java, Indonesia, since 1985.  Watching this video brings back a lot of memories. And almost all of their challenges were true:

    1.  Its very tiring, long working hours; my parents wake up at 4 a.m., open the shop at 5 a.m., and close at 9 p.m., every day.
    2. Fierce competition from other shops, especially nationwide supermarket chains.
    3.  The difficulty of finding a successor to run the family business.

Fortunately, my sister and her family have decided to be the successors of my parents' shop.  I hope for the best for all hardworking families out there.

Many thanks to you, Paolo, for making this beautiful video.
