Attempting To Run 100kms Of The Kumano Kodo – Japan’s Ancient Pilgrimage Trail

I’ve been wanting to trail run on the Kumano Kodo for the longest time so to finally get to do it was such a delight! This was one of my favourite trips we made in the whole year and I can’t believe the kinds of places we got to see. Maybe one day I’ll be back to try the other routes…

Thank you Chris for editing this beast of a video! It was a mountain to climb and he absolutely nailed it. Go follow him on IG at www.instagram.com/kihara_chris

  1. Great video. Thank you. But not to be a Ken, just wanted to point out that some of the stuff that you use and consume are known to be really bad. Not to be preachy or anything but I can't believe that you are drinking Coke, and slapping sunscreen cream and the gels are full of chemicals, and painkiller pills? And these are just the things that you showed in the video.

  2. It's challenging enough to hike through the mountains of Japan, let alone run them especially with asthma. What an awesome adventure. I was cheering you on the entire way. I had Nachi Taisha on my list, but hadn't considered hiking any of the Kumano Kodo. I have now added this route to my list because expansive vistas, tree houses of fun, red shrooms, and foggy ancient trees.

  3. wow, that was amazing! thank you for bringing us all along to experience it with you. I'm sure i'll roll my ankle shortly in solidarity for yours

  4. This is my favorite kind of content. Doing hard things, explaining how it works, showing us the view along the way. Had no idea there was hiking insurance in Japan. Also, for some reason (Nachi can probably take credit) I took my family to Wakayama for our first mainland Japan trip, and I am so glad we did. It is a beautiful prefecture!

  5. 70km is no easy feat but then you have the aches and pains and add that you were also filming. Thanks for taking us on the adventure! It was such a joy to watch!

  8. Excellent video and excellent achievement. One day i'll follow your steps albeit much slower. I love Kumano hongu taisha and the Otorii been there twice already. Where was that 4WD campsite? That looks hecka fun

  9. Thank you, Hannah. I’ve long wanted to do an ancient pilgrimage trail and recently fallen for Japan. I now have a route to aim for.

  10. Such a great video. I loved living vicariously through you in this adventure! Thank you for making content like this.

  11. Sooo enjoyed this video! It was like a hero's journey, but more giggly!

Went to part of Kimano Kodo last year with my friend and it was mostly road (possibly even same part you've done?) and then we got lost and were chased by bees (or wasps?). At least the non-roady parts were pretty 😅

  12. After living and raising kids in Tokyo the appeal of "Nothing" cannot be underestimated. Rural Saitama and Chichibu Especially (Nariki kaido) are the best places I've ever lived, Niigata Joetsu a little too nothing. You did well with the weather, That said we always carry our Bear bells, with as much riding we do, we've seen too many bears to not take precautions.

  13. Wow – this is absolutely stunning Hannah and Chris – the most beautiful video you have done to date. I hope you have recovered Hannah. Running and videoing in this terrain is incredibly taxing and the toll on your body would have been quite demanding and potentially damaging. It was a real treat to watch. Many thanks for all your hard work and efforts.

  14. this just popped up on my feed and I am so glad. Planning trip in spring and I run trails so this is a must do and stunning from start to finish. Thank you so much for sharing – Did you purchase the gels and electrolytes in Japan, bring with you or were you able to have them shipped to you. Wondering if I need to bring these with me.
