To be fair, spring is expensive and crowded. Summer is too hot and humid, fall is typhoons… so winter is great! ^^
・・・home shrine…PEACE✌ I understand well why you like winter in Japan.
Hearing you say goated gave me culture shock from my own bedroom, bravo. And yeah, over here in canada there's a ton of snow and it's so cold… Yet anything above like 5 degrees is perfect weather to me! I'm going to Japan from January to March, and it seems like such a perfect time to go.
Totally agree – Japan is great in winter! Well, coming from a Nordic country, I have to admit that I might be biased as I personally always prefer cold over heat (and Japanese summers are excruciating!). Less tourists – also a good point (especially when you don't like crowds). Thank you for a great video and explanations!
video cut off again
Why did you say Go to onsen and not Go to an Onsen? I've often heard residents speak this way even when speaking to native English speakers.
all i know is that since the 20 year old wooden house i am living in is built to be "in harmony with nature", i have to pay way more for utilities during winter… i might have liked winter, if i did not have to live a "wagie" life, and could enjoy the luxury of leisured existence
As soon as I saw the title of your post, IMMEDIATE LIKE!!!! Fall and Winter are my favorite seasons, for all the reasons you mentioned. I grew up in Kansas, but I lived in Arizona, Florida, and now Texas as an adult. Summers in Arizona (dry heat),, Florida (damp heat), and Texas (both!) approach miserable! If I go to Japan, I definitely want to go to Hokkaido. And 'thanks' for talking about all of the tasty food. Now I'm hungry! Great video!
#coldtakes
Nice topic but 1) why the abrupt ending to the video? and 2) from a tourist perspective, how long are the daylight hours in Winter?
Are you walking 🚶♀️ n Kamakura?
I am quickly approaching my 5th year living in Japan. I continue to appreciate and treasure every moment of life my peaceful here. This is my first time commenting on one of your videos, but I wanted to say that your channel has very quickly become my favorite channel on YouTube!! Thank you for so constantly releasing new videos!!
I’m excited to visit again in February, will be going to Hokkaido, and specifically for ice festival in Sapporo! I love winter!!!
As someone from Florida I couldn't agree more. My first trip to Japan will be in winter. I'm happy to see there are even more benefits than suspected. It's like double or triple the adventure!
Agree with the Shochu mixed with hot water, though I also like it with a teaspoon of marmalade included. I know folks call the monkeys "snow monkeys", but in fact are there in the water all year. They just look cuter in winter. Merry Xmas.
great video, im arriving in Japan for the first time ever this month on the 28th and I will be there for 3 weeks. since im a minnesotan Tokyo might be a little bit of a warm vacation for me haha. im so excited for my trip now, a few of your points I had never heard of!
Hiking in the mountains west of Tokyo in late autumn through early spring are some of my best memories of Japan. One Saturday we took the train to Chichibu and hiked to the Uruyama dam. You can even go inside the dam itself and take the elevator down to the mid-point. There is a pond next to it full of frogs, whose purpose is the ritual protection of the dam.
There seems to be a tradition where at the dam sites the restaurants serve "damukare' (dam curry) where the food on the plate is arranged in the shape of the dam, the rice-dam protecting the dry food on the rest of the plate from the curry sauce. This year I want to try a couple of different dam curries.
From the road next to the dam we bushwhacked a steep climb straight west, dry under the cedar canopy, up into the fresh snow on the ridgetop where we found a trail that led back down to the town. And of course, in Chichibu an onsen and a hot meal awaited us.
I just filled up my kerosene tank, and it came to a bit over 27k yen! That will last me about a month if I turn it off in the daytime. That said, there are no insects, humidity, bears, wild boars, or grass to cut.
Love how you mention no mosquitoes. Those are the least of our worries. We had a huge problem with stink bugs this year, and the suzumebachi were still as much of a terror as always.
That said, I agree. It's far better to be warm and comfortable than cool and comfortable.
Indeed. I live in Tokyo but always go to my house in the countryside of Nagano during winter. The snow here in Nagano is pure and powdery, unlike the dirty slushy hails in Tokyo.
Many tourists for snow festival here in Sapporo…in February. But, I’m with you..I love winter here. Better than hot and humid Virginia where I’m from.
Both me and my cat think you’re crazy, Wisconsin, because for residents, winter is the worst season in Japan compared to latter spring, all of summer and early fall when you can wear short pants all day any day in Tokyo.
Everything you described also seems to have made you more Japanese than me in less than half the time which makes me wonder—–do you put up a Christmas tree?
But while living in Japan it is necessary to go to the Shrine after New Year’s until about the 3rd or 5th like you said. And that’s because you gotta give coins to the money god and the health god while also purchasing 2 good luck trinkets—–one for your car to prevent accidents and the other to make sure you have a good business or earnings year going forward.
I’m sorry to say. I hate winters in Japan coz my home is always cold, most homes are not well insulated and also the cold wind comes straight through my layers of clothes no matter how much I bundle up. I usually like winter as long as my home is nice and cozy. Lol tho I miss snowboarding and walking in the snow. I’m from Vancouver BC and will be 20 years for me in Feb 2025. Still lots to see which I have not explored yet.
beautiful video my friend! weve had a few bad air quality days here in Hiroshima city … dont you think the air feels fresher in winter, too?
Fantastic!
I’m in Japan now
Was in Okinawa then Osaka so Tokio now
2,5 months:) Agreed with you 100%! Thanks for Video! Stay the way you are❤😊😊
Im going in winter now !
Your enthusiasm for winter really came through in this video. Really insightful stuff. But come to think of it, the last time I was in Japan during December, I did have some oden with friends…and it was simply divine. Excellent recommendation!
Green tea and onsen.
MY JAPAN.
Fall is the best season in Kagoshima for hiking. We barely get a real winter here.
Being from the same home town and the weather that comes with it, how do you cope with the summers? They seem potent, not that the US midwest doesn't have its share of brutal heat and humidity.
As a Japanese, I agree with you.
the worst season is summer
We’re not supposed to be live in the hell.
Oh i plan to do solo traveling from mid of October to January in Japan next year. I really hope all works out
Winter ist goated 😂😂😂😂
As a man that is living his whole life in the Philippines, I still wonder what winter feels like lol.
