THIS Was Ranked Tokyo’s “Coolest Neighborhood” — But Why?

It’s not Shibuya, Asakusa or Shinjuku. Time Out ranked Gakugeidaigaku as one of the “Coolest Neighborhoods in the World” — the only one in Japan this year. And it also may just be one of the city’s best-kept secrets.

Near Shibuya, Ebisu and Nakameguro, but less known and crowded than the three, this often overlooked corner of Tokyo has so much to explore, from new restaurants and cafes to long-standing, family-owned mom and pop shops. In this video, meet some of the locals who make Gakugeidaigaku so cool and explore some of its best eats, restaurants and cafes.

Now we want to hear from you — is this really the coolest neighborhood in Tokyo? And if so, why?

  2. Thanks for the cool tour of Gakudai Shizuka! The people you encountered were so nice and friendly. And Leina chan made a cameo! How cool is that!😄

  3. It’s not easy eating that chicken meatball with egg yolk. This host does it still looking like a supermodel.

Was just thinking I wanted to have a day in Tokyo, not worrying about the 'sights", just taking in a cool, low key neighbourhood. This seems to meet the bill perfectly, thanks!!

  5. Shizuka is the most upbeat, positive & joyful host ever! So refreshing! 😊

  6. Was in Japan in September and planning to book another trip for next year so saving these places on google maps ❤❤❤😊

  7. I'm always getting angry, when I clicked to the "Japan by Food" video. Not because of the video or their hosts, but for the numer of subscription <(°-°<)

  8. oh, that does look like a lot of fun, I'd love to walk around and check out all the great spots there, especially want to snag a seat at the Yakitori joint

  9. I love that Shizuka was able to experience the homey feeling of Canada at the donut shop. What a neat area to consider visiting!
