Have you heard about Enoshima? I think is a hidden gem, when i went there (twice) even tho there it was a bunch of tourists, they were mostly asian so i think maybe is not that popular for westerns.

Enoshima is a very popular day trip for Tokyoites.

I was there this past May during my Tokyo trip. Probably my favorite part of the trip was seeing Kotoku-in in Kamakura and then taking the Enoden line over to Enoshima. Very picturesque island, even if it murders your legs. 😂

Enoshima Island is a well known destination for tourists, especially during the summer when they have the Lantern Festival.

Went there for a day trip in 2022, found it very enjoyable. It has a bit of everything: shrine, garden, views, meals, the cliffs and caves. Can easily see them all in one day at a leisure pace and get back to Tokyo when it starts getting dark.

I enjoy walking along the ocean from Kamakura all the way to Enoshima.

They have beautiful Illumination events there in the winter

Enoshima is a tourist hotspot and no hidden gem at all. A gem indeed, but not hidden. Its among the best rated beaches/ sea side towns close to tokyo. A fantastic fishing site as well if you are will to trek across the island

Lol it’s not that it’s more popular with asian tourists, but simply that there are way more tourists from China, Korea, etc.

used to go there as kid. It was my family ‘s favorite get away place from tokyo.
But considering how packed the main road it with tourist, I wouldn’t say hidden at all. Still my favorite daytrip place though, went there once a month at least for cycling.

I went here in the morming in mid June last year and it was easily the quietest place of the trip. Maybe a dozen locals around the shrine. Had a beautiful walk through the sea cave tunnels and down by the water. Unfortunately it was cloudy/rainy the whole time when I was staying in Kamakura so no Mt Fuji views. Definitely recommended for a day trip from Tokyo.

It’s possibly the most popular day trip from Tokyo

It’s only hidden if you think Japan consists only of Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto.

Tsuritama used to be my favorite anime to watch in the summer as a teenager. When I visited Enoshima it was so lovely 😀 all the bright and colourful nature scenes through the island made sense seeing it all in person.

It’s too far out that’s why! Even from Osaka unless you drive, public transportation would take hours.

Translated, I think Enoshima means island of a million stairs. Kidding aside, it is a nice place to visit for a while then go to Kamakura.

Enoshima is a hidden gem? I don’t know if it’s true, but Enoshima is the first place in Japan that I recognized before I knew the other Japanese places.

I had no idea Enoshima was obscure. I mean, Kamakura is quite famous, and you can take the local tram to Enoshima in practically no time (and take a break not too far from the Daibutsu along the way). This is such a beautiful area. Just thinking about it makes me want to return.
