Japan Has Changed | 10 New Things to Know Before Traveling to Japan in Autumn 2024 | NEW Attractions

Japan has become one of the hottest travel destinations right now, with foreign visitor numbers skyrocketing! Just this past September, Japan saw a 31.5% increase in visitors over last year and a remarkable 26.4% jump compared to pre-COVID levels in 2019. For eight months in a row, the monthly visitor count has set new records.
But with this surge in tourism, Japan itself is changing in ways that travelers should be aware of—some positive, some challenging, and some essential for a smooth trip.
On the bright side, new ticketing options and updates to ticket gates have made trains even easier to navigate. Popular attractions keep popping up, like teamLab’s new area, the newly opened Nintendo Museum, and the remodeled Dogo Onsen, one of Japan’s oldest hot springs and the inspiration for a famous anime.
However, on the negative side, with the influx of visitors, hotel prices are climbing fast, and bike rules are stricter now, which may affect tourists wanting to explore by bike.
In this video, I’ll cover ten important updates so you’re fully prepared to make the most of your time in Japan this autumn.
In addition, I provide tour guide services, itinerary planning services based on your requests and preferences, unlimited Q&A services to make your visit as smooth and enjoyable as possible. If you are interested, please check out the description area.
By watching this video, you’ll be better prepared to navigate Japan and make the most of your trip. So, make sure to watch till the end!

  1. Well, Drinking and driving have never been tolerated in several countries, and here in Canada, it's probably the same. I know it applies to Boaters, so cyclists should be careful.

  2. I just got back from Japan 2 weeks ago and it was a wonderful experience for solo traveling! Just wanting to stop by here and say thank you for the very useful guides to help my trip go smoothly! I’ll continue to support your channel as always for more future trips, hopefully one for spring!

  3. Thank you Toshi for this new updates. I am waiting that new performers at kabukicho. So exiting.

  4. Thanks for your updates Toshi. As a tourist myself who follow the japanese etiquette, it is stressful to see bad behavior being displayed by the influx of foreigners coming to visit. They bring all their bad habits into the country and upset the locals as well as other tourists who follow the proper etiquette and manners.

I think it’s good they are making cycling safer with those rules.

As for the ticket gates using Visa or credit cards, I am not fond of that because of the fees and exchange rates that will be charged for foreign currency. I rather hold the paper tickets and hope that option will still be available – at least we can still print out the QR code for use when we reserve online. It will be a problem if suddenly our phone battery dies or there is something wrong with the phone. So usually we have both the printed as well as the digital just in case.

It’s cool to know about the new museums and sights especially the Team Lab Forest in Ibaraki.

We are headed for our 2nd visit this year to Tokyo, Yonezawa and Izu end of Nov. The autumn forecast seems to state that it’s late this year so perhaps we may be able to catch some autumn colours during our stay.

Once again, thanks for your updates.

  5. I will avoid Japan from April till the end of October 2025 due to the Expo in Osaka. During that time it will be full and even more expensive. If you need to go, avoid the Tokyo and the whole Kansai region during that time. Hokkaido should be save from all the issues (hopefully).

  6. I returned from my trip to Japan last Sunday. Unfortunately I didn't find any foliage (the maples were starting to turn red only in Koyasan and Kyoto). For the rest, nature was still bright green and the kids walked around in shorts. To be able to admire the foliage, I hope to be able to come in November next time.
Unfortunately, no Mount Fuji in Fujiyoshida and Kawaguchi (it rained all the time) and, an unfortunate misunderstanding, prevented me from going to Narai-juku. However, I visited Kanazawa, Shirakawa, Takayama, Matsumoto, Koyasan (How many small Inari shrines I discovered like in a fairy tale!), Kyoto, Omi Hachiman and Uji (where the torrential rain triggered the weather alert). But above all I was able to admire Nikko, currently my favorite Japanese destination.
Unfortunately there were some problems mainly related to the fact that I don't know Japanese. Well I hope to be able to return in two years and in the meantime I will start studying the Kana, so that I can better face a solo trip. However, I will also evaluate the tours offered by Italian agencies. But now it is important to study the language before booking any trip.
