The route from Sapporo to Churui is dotted with unique stops that showcase the island’s heritage, such as the Niikappu Michinoeki (Road Station), where a towering structure offers panoramic views of Niikappu town. From the top, I was treated to a visual feast of mountains (national park), and a stunning coastline. The tallest mountain, Poroshiridake(2052m), Poroshiri means big mountain in Ainu language.

Niikappu isn’t just about the views; it’s also renowned for its racehorses. With a history dating back to 1872, these horses served in the army and on farms. Inside the tower’s lift, you’re surrounded by painted horses, and at the top, racehorse pictures adorn the walls. It’s like an equine art gallery, and the admission is free!
And if you’re into unconventional souvenirs, Niikappu has got you covered with soap, face, and hand creams made from horse oils. Talk about bringing a piece of the racehorse town back home!

As the sun begins to set, Mituishi Michinoeki (Road Station) offers a front-row seat to the most spectacular show in town – the sunset.

After conquering Nozuka Touge, standing proud at 585 meters, I arrived at Taiki Michinoeki (Road Station).
The stop at Taiki Michinoeki offers a chance to unwind. Here, I can indulge in local cuisine at the adjacent store and relax in the eat-in corner.

Finally, I reached today’s destination, Churui Michinoeki (Road Station), where the real magic happens. For just 600 yen, I can soak in a bubble bath or an outdoor hot spring, staring up at the dark sky.

A road trip offers more than just a change of scenery. It’s a cultural experience, a historical tour, and a spa retreat all rolled into one. I don’t even need to leave the comfort of the car to enjoy them. Well, except for the hot springs – you’ll definitely want to get out for those.

Michinoeki, which are roadside stations that offer various services. They have free parking and 24-hour toilets (not every Michnoeki), which are very convenient for travelers.
