I WAS ALMOST DENIED ENTRY INTO JAPAN

15.02.24

This was the day I was going to leave Seoul and embark on a crazy one and a half month journey across almost all of Japan. The day started off not so good because from what I was told during check-in, I might be in trouble once I reach Japan…

I’m just going to leave it at that haha. You’re going to have to watch the full episode to find out how all this unfolds, and trust me you’re going to want to as I experience Korean Air in Prestige Class, as well as arrive in Sapporo and see the city in snowy February. Both for the very first time 🙂

One thing I will say though is that i didn’t say it in the video, but a part of me thought that I just wouldn’t be allowed to board the Korean Air flight regardless.

If you like what you see, don’t forget to drop a like and subscribe to support the channel! As these videos aren’t the easiest to make. Also as always, don’t forget to watch any of my previous videos just to see how this journey started.

  1. It's not taking a mild risk as countries like Japan require you to have an onward ticket because they strongly act against overstaying visas. Not having one when asked is sufficient reason to kick you out. If you get stopped for a random check in Japan (and it happens sometimes if you're unlucky), they can still send you out with a ban of entry for a certain amount of time. It's not worth it. It's good to see you booked a flight right after. A ferry ticket would also be fine, I assume- but hey. Enjoy your trip!

  2. you and the Korean air lady did the right thing, she did advise you correctly and you acted on it. Japan laws are very strict, not worth screwing up your holiday.

  3. This is a long standing regulation of many countries, and it has nothing to do with one's visa/visa-on-arrival status, though those who must obtain a visa from the embassy or consulate are scrutinised for the likelihood of overstaying the visa. Goes back at least 35 years, if not longer. Korea enforces the same requirement too, btw. The people most affected are long-term backpackers, many of whom travel overland, and not many governments are too concerned about appealing to them. Some, such a Bhutan, didn't want them at all. If the person was denied entry and didn't have funds to buy a ticket, the carrying airline could be ordered to return the person back to the point of embarkation. At the time Hong Kong was one of the few countries in Asia were one could fly in on a one-way ticket and not face a potential hassle, which made Hong Kong a great place to pick up cheap tickets for flying around Asia. The way to get around this requirement is to book a refundable ticket out of the country, for example Sapporo to Bangkok. Once you're in Japan and you've decided your plans, cancel the ticket and book your actual flight/voyage out. Just make sure to cancel the ticket within the allotted time. And I see you figured this out. Tougher to act on in the pre-internet days, though one could buy tickets at the airport if the ticket office was open.
