🏝️Karuizawa is a place name commonly seen in the Saku region of the Tōshin area in Nagano Prefecture. It has been branded as a summer resort and villa area. In a narrow sense, it refers to the Old Karuizawa district or the entire Karuizawa town in Kitasaku District, Nagano Prefecture. In a broader sense, it includes surrounding areas such as Miyota Town (West Karuizawa), Naganohara Town/Tsumagoi Village in Gunma Prefecture (North Karuizawa/Okukaruizawa), and Annaka City (East Karuizawa).
The name “Karuizawa” can also be found in other parts of Nagano Prefecture, such as Ueda City, Sanada Town, Oaza Sobe, Nyukaruizawa, and Nagano City, Shinkomachi, Oaza Tazawa, Karuizawa. Outside of Nagano Prefecture, it exists in various places including Hachinohe City in Aomori Prefecture, Odate City and Yurihonjo City in Akita Prefecture, Kaminoyama City in Yamagata Prefecture, Nagaoka City in Niigata Prefecture, Kamagaya City in Chiba Prefecture, Nishi Ward in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture (North Karuizawa/South Karuizawa), Kannami Town in Tagata District, Shizuoka Prefecture, and Ikoma City in Nara Prefecture.
The origin of the name “Karuizawa” is unclear, but there are several theories. One theory suggests it comes from the old word or dialect “karuu,” meaning to carry luggage on one’s back, referring to a valley leading to a pass. Another theory suggests it derives from “Kareizawa” (a dried-up stream), “Koorisawa” (a frozen stream), or “Karuishizawa” (a stream formed by pumice stones).
The traditional pronunciation is “Karuizawa” with a flat intonation. However, since the Meiji era, as it became widely known as a summer resort and foreigners frequently visited, the pronunciation “Karuizawa” with a rising intonation became established because it was easier for them to pronounce. Even today, locals sometimes pronounce it as “Karuizawa.”
